In Worcester, preventing teen drownings one free swimming lesson at a time

Thousands of people die from drowning every year, and in an effort to prevent further tragedies, students from UMass Chan Medical School are giving teenagers swimming lessons. The free two-hour sessions, held at a YMCA swimming pool in Worcester, focus on safety essentials and “getting kids to learn to stay afloat and how to tread water,” said Sarah Willey, a spokeswoman for the medical school.
