Robert A. Gottlieb, who during a seven-decade career as the top editor at Simon & Schuster, Alfred A. Knopf and the New Yorker published Toni Morrison, Joseph Heller and Robert Caro, among other authors who could fill an anthology of contemporary literary heavyweights, died June 14 at a hospital in Manhattan.
