Last surviving French D-Day soldier Leon Gautier dies at 100

Leon Gautier, the last surviving Frenchman who fought the Nazis on D-Day, died Monday. He was 100. Gautier had been hospitalized with lung problems a few weeks ago, according to Romain Bail, mayor of the town where the veteran lived. He died at a hospital in Caen. Though U.S., British and Canadian troops comprised most of the Allied forces on D-Day, 177 French soldiers fought alongside them, part of an elite unit known as Kieffer Commandos.
